Koné says yes to Chelsea, a sale is very close: Roma are asking for €60 million, but Gasperini is putting up a wall.
Contact made overnight, talks described as advanced this morning, and a manager who says none of it exists. Twelve hours from the deadline, Roma's midfield hangs on a number nobody has put on paper yet.
He is the most searched name in Italy on this first of September, and it is no accident: Chelsea have knocked on Roma's door for Manu Koné, and they have done it in the only window where these deals become possible: the last hours.
The timeline, hour by hour
The first move came around lunchtime yesterday, with Chelsea contacting the French midfielder's agents to see whether the route existed at all. Overnight the conversation widened to the club: at 10:25 this morning it was described as official contact with Roma, but with no formal offer submitted. Five minutes later, at 10:30, another account raised the level and called the talks advanced, on a basis of around €60 million.
The reason for the rush sits in London, not Rome. Chelsea have to replace Enzo Fernández, in talks with Manchester City, and the first alternative considered, Monaco's Lamine Camara, was set aside yesterday afternoon because the French club wanted more than €50 million. Koné is the next name on that list.
Roma's price
The Italian club have never hidden their valuation: €60 million, a figure set internally after 1 July, when he had been rated between €45 and €50 million. It is the same demand being repeated now, and it is the clearest way of saying that the final day of a window is not the moment for discounts.
The club line had already been made public on 24 August by sporting director Tony D'Amico, who arrived in the summer in place of Frederic Massara: no major sale between now and the end of the window.
Gasperini shuts the door in public
Then last night, straight after the game at Lecce, the manager spoke, and the tone changed. Gian Piero Gasperini denied it categorically: he called it a media story, said nobody had ever spoken to him about departures, not Koné or anyone else, and added that the ownership is not in favour of any sale. The heaviest line was the last one: he does not know who has come forward, because no official offers have ever arrived.
There is a back story behind that calm: in mid-August the Frenchman personally promised him he would stay. In football promises are worth what they are worth, but it is why no emergency plan appears to exist at Trigoria.
Where the versions do not meet
This is where the story needs care. On one side, the manager's public denial and the stated absence of official offers. On the other, an exclusive from a specialist British outlet, published this morning, claiming personal terms between Koné and Chelsea have already been agreed, albeit with no formal proposal delivered to Roma.
Both cannot be true at the same time. And a third element muddies it further: an Italian site close to the club wrote this morning that the offer has already been rejected, without naming a figure, and the claim is not matched by the live coverage of the same hours, which still describes talks as ongoing.
What is documented, in the end, is little: contacts were made, Roma set a price, the manager denied it. No registered bid, no club statement, not a word from the player.
There is a deal going the other way too
A detail almost everyone is missing: the Roma-Chelsea line is being worked in both directions. The Italians want winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, born in 2004, and tried a paid loan of around €5 million with a €55 million purchase obligation, roughly €60 million in total. Overnight Chelsea reportedly refused to consider a loan, and the route remains very difficult.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, Roma are flying
The paradox is that all of this lands at the best possible moment. Last night they won 4-0 away at Lecce, with a brace from Donyell Malen, a goal from Soulé and Rodrigo Mora's first in Italy: six points from two games.
And Koné? He played the full ninety alongside Cristante, never substituted, and the ratings were unanimous: sevens almost everywhere, with one paper calling him a giant in midfield and another a king in the middle of the park. A difficult shop window to ignore.
What happens between now and tonight
The final hours work one way only: either Chelsea put a number on the table Roma cannot refuse, in which case a replacement is needed within hours, or nothing happens and the story closes the way it opened. There is no middle ground, because a midfielder of that weight is not replaced by a loan grabbed at midnight.
