Premier League table and results: Brian Brobbey hat-trick in vain as Manchester City beat Sunderland 5-3 and Arsenal lose 3-0 at Brighton
Brian Brobbey scores three at the Etihad but Sunderland lose 5-3, and Maresca's Manchester City keep their perfect record. Champions Arsenal lose 3-0 at Brighton, De Zerbi's Tottenham are stuck on 2 points, and Fulham vs Manchester United ends 1-1 after Cunha's 89th-minute equaliser. Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick at the Etihad and still ended up on the losing side: Manchester City beat Sunderland 5-3 on Sunday in gameweek 5 of the Premier League. Enzo Maresca's side are the only team with a perfect record, 15 points from 15, and go into the international break three points clear of champions Arsenal, who lost 3-0 at Brighton on Saturday. At the other end, Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham have 2 points, level with Fulham.

Who is Brian Brobbey?
A 24-year-old Dutch striker, born in Amsterdam on 1 February 2002, Brobbey came through at Ajax and spent six months at RB Leipzig in 2021 before going back. Sunderland signed him on 1 September 2025, so this is his second season in England; last season he scored 7 in 31 Premier League games. He had not scored in any competition this season: his goals in the 12th, 33rd and 59th minutes were his first of the campaign.
He is the sixth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick and lose, the first since Roque Santa Cruz in December 2007, and the fourth to hit three against the side that started the day top. No Sunderland player had scored a top-flight hat-trick since Jermain Defoe in January 2016. It was also Brobbey's first Premier League hat-trick. “It's hard being on the losing side when you're scoring three goals,” he said on television.
Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland
City led three times in the first half, through Enzo Fernández, Cherki and Semenyo, and Brobbey pulled Sunderland level twice. At 3-2 Sunderland wanted a penalty for an Elliot Anderson handball and did not get one: Régis Le Bris said it was hard not to see it as a handball, but the decision had to be accepted. After the break came Semenyo's second, Brobbey's third and one from Haaland.
Maresca's verdict: “I prefer to win 1-0 than 5-3.” Semenyo's pair were his first goals of the season. Haaland has 5 in five games and tops the Premier League scoring charts, one ahead of Isak; Sunderland were the one Premier League side he had never scored against, and he has now scored against all 25 he has faced. In midweek, against Norwich in the Carabao Cup, 17-year-old Floyd Samba had scored twice on his debut (our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 5 out of 10: wrong). For Manchester City v Sunderland, our call was at least two goals, confidence 6 out of 10: correct.
Brighton 3-0 Arsenal: a first defeat for the champions
Our preview billed it as the best attack against the best defence, and the attack won: Groß and Kostoulas scored before the break, then Chema Andrés headed in a Groß corner. For Arsenal, without the injured Saliba and Ben White, it was a first competitive defeat of the season and their heaviest in the Premier League since May 2023, when Brighton also won 3-0, at the Emirates. As reigning champions they had not lost so heavily since October 1989.
Mikel Arteta in his press conference: “You could see from the first throw-in, it was so clear”, and “it's a big lesson for us”. Fabian Hürzeler's Brighton, who had knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (our call was the home side to score, confidence 6 out of 10: correct), have 16 goals in five games, the best attack in the division, and are third on their own on 10 points. Groß has 3 goals and 3 assists, the same as Chelsea's João Pedro: no one in the league has been involved in more. For Brighton v Arsenal, our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: correct.
Tottenham's worst Premier League start
Tottenham, managed by De Zerbi since he replaced Igor Tudor on 31 March, lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa and have 2 points and a goal difference of -6: their worst Premier League start after five games. Their first league goals of the season came only at 3-0 down, from Gallagher on 86 and van Hecke on 90+8. Pedro Porro went off after 19 minutes with a muscle problem (“It's a hamstring, I think. Hopefully, it's not a big problem,” said De Zerbi), and the Spanish federation has taken him out of its Nations League squad. For Unai Emery's Villa it was a first league win of the season. For Tottenham v Aston Villa, our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: wrong.
Fulham 1-1 Manchester United: Cunha on 89 minutes
On 63 minutes Bassey's shot was saved by Lammens and went in off Lisandro Martínez: an own goal, 1-0 to Fulham. On 89 Matheus Cunha equalised with a shot deflected by Affengruber, his first Premier League goal of the season. Michael Carrick, confirmed as head coach in May after his months as caretaker: “I thought we should've won the game. We created enough to win the game.” Manchester United, without Šeško, who had felt some pain after the previous game, have 5 points, level with Nottingham Forest. Álvaro Arbeloa's Fulham are still without a league win: 2 points, level with Tottenham. For Fulham v Manchester United, our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: correct.
Iraola's return: Isak wins it at Bournemouth
Andoni Iraola, who took Bournemouth to sixth last season and into Europe for the first time in their history, was back there for the first time as head coach of Liverpool. Isak decided it on 57 minutes from a Gakpo cross: 4 goals in five games, one more than in the whole of last season's Premier League. “To win here is very difficult, I know it very well,” Iraola said. Liverpool are unbeaten in the league and have not conceded in three league games. Marco Rose's Bournemouth have 3 points and no Premier League win, though on Thursday they beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the club's first European game (our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: correct): it is in our Europa League round-up, along with Sunderland's 1-0 against AZ (our call was under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: correct). For Bournemouth v Liverpool, our call was at least two goals, confidence 7 out of 10: wrong.
The rest of gameweek 5
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea. Xabi Alonso's Chelsea, without Reece James and João Pedro, have gone three league games without a win. “This is not enough to compete in the Premier League, not to be able to go for the 90 minutes,” Alonso said.
Everton 1-0 Ipswich. VAR ruled out a second Barry goal, and Fatawu was sent off after a second booking, for diving. David Moyes' Everton are unbeaten in the league.
Newcastle 2-1 Hull City. Tzolakis saved a Wissa penalty. It was Hull's first league defeat of the season.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Coventry. Jay DaSilva scored Coventry's first league goal of the season, and it brought their first Premier League win in 25 years. Late on, VAR ruled out an Igor Jesus equaliser for a foul on Caleb Yirenkyi.
Leeds 0-0 Crystal Palace. Pierre Sage's Palace kept their first league clean sheet of the season; Daniel Farke's Leeds stay unbeaten in the league.

We published a call on all ten games: 7 correct and 3 wrong. Four results (Leeds-Palace, City-Sunderland, Fulham-United and Bournemouth-Liverpool) are not yet recorded on the site: we worked them out from the 90-minute score, and on a call about the number of goals the arithmetic leaves no doubt. The three misses:
Tottenham v Aston Villa, under 4.5 goals, confidence 7 out of 10: it was 0-3 until the 86th minute, then Tottenham scored their first two league goals of the season and the total reached five.
Everton v Ipswich, at least two goals, confidence 7 out of 10: it finished 1-0, VAR ruled out a second Barry goal and Ipswich played with ten men from the 67th minute.
Bournemouth v Liverpool, at least two goals, confidence 7 out of 10: it finished 0-1. Liverpool have not conceded in three league games, and Alisson kept out an Evanilson backheel.

Correct: at least two shots for Bukayo Saka and Julio Enciso; at least two shots and at least one on target for Thierno Barry; at least one foul for Matt Crooks, Diego Gómez, Saša Lukić, João Gomes and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Wrong: Morgan Gibbs-White (at least two shots), who did not have a shot in 90 minutes; Cole Palmer (at least one shot on target), who had two efforts, both blocked; Vitaly Janelt (at least one foul), who did not commit one in 90 minutes. The break: Brobbey with the Netherlands, England v Spain at Wembley
Everything stops for the Nations League. Xavi Hernández has named Brobbey in his first Netherlands squad, along with van Hecke, Gakpo and Gravenberch. The Netherlands host Germany in Amsterdam on Thursday, and our call is at least two goals, confidence 7 out of 10; then they travel to Belgrade to face Serbia on Sunday 27th: our call is under 4.5 goals, confidence 6 out of 10.
Thomas Tuchel named 27 players on 18 September, Palmer, Rashford and Mainoo among them. On the morning of Monday 21 September the English press reported that Palmer was set to withdraw with a minor muscle problem, that Morgan Gibbs-White could come in for him, and that Rashford and Mainoo, who both came off at Craven Cottage, were doubts.
