Mudryk's ban is over: what happened, and his first minutes back for Tottenham
Seventeen minutes at Nottingham, his first in 646 days. The exact chronology of the case, the technical document that changed it, and what De Zerbi said about his condition.
On Saturday afternoon, in the 0-0 between Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, Mykhailo Mudryk came on in the second half and played seventeen minutes. They were his first in 646 days.
It is the return of a player who spent almost two years out through an anti-doping case, closed at the end of July in a way worth setting out in full, because it is less simple than the summaries suggest.
The chronology, by date
These are the dates given by the English federation in its own statement closing the proceedings.
22 October 2024 — the doping control. The sample tests positive for meldonium, a prohibited substance, found in low concentration.
4 December 2024 — the player is notified and provisionally suspended. He does not play another official match from that day.
23 May 2025 — the formal charges are brought.
7-9 January 2026 — the hearing before the independent commission, which imposes a four-year period of ineligibility.
Mudryk appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
30 July 2026 — the case closes by agreement between the player, the English federation and the world anti-doping agency. Mudryk accepts the violations charged and accedes to a period of ineligibility equal to the time already served. From that point he is no longer ineligible and may return to competition with immediate effect.
The detail that changed the case
The federation's statement carries the line that explains how four years became no further days: the updated standards in the world anti-doping agency's technical document set different thresholds for that substance, and under the current parameters that sample, analysed today, would not trigger any violation.
It is not an acquittal and is not presented as one: the violation stands accepted, by the player himself, in the agreement. What changed, while the case was running, was the measuring stick.
How he ended up at Tottenham
The move came at the start of September: a loan from Chelsea for the 2026-27 season, with a buy option set at £75m.
The manager who wanted him is Roberto De Zerbi, who had coached him at Shakhtar Donetsk: the manager under whom Mudryk played the best football of his career, before the move to London.
What condition he is in
On this the manager was blunt and sold nothing. After the game he said Mudryk is not ready yet, that he is working to reach his best physical condition, and that he needs time and he needs work.
That is the realistic read: twenty-two months without a competitive match are not undone in a week, and the seventeen minutes at Nottingham were about getting back on a pitch, not about settling a game.
What to watch now
Tottenham come out of this round with a problem Mudryk's return does not solve on its own: after three matches they have yet to score. How long it takes him to become a solution rather than just a comeback will show in the minutes he gets over the next few weeks.
