Twenty-nine years on, he faces Liechtenstein again, this time as Lithuania's head coach, when the two open their Nations League campaign in Vaduz on Thursday 24 September. The hosts have lost their last five competitive games without scoring; Lithuania have gone five competitive games without a win.

Liechtenstein vs Lithuania kicks off at 19:45 UK time (20:45 CEST) on Thursday 24 September at the Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz. It is Group D2 of League D in the Nations League, a three-team group completed by Azerbaijan, with four games each between September and November. Liechtenstein's German coach Konrad Fünfstück named 27 players, but four will only join after this game: striker Villiam Pizzi on Friday 25 September, and goalkeeper Gabriel Foser, defender Andreas Malin (57 caps) and Luca Beck on 2 October. The 23 called up for the first game all reported on Monday 21 September free of injuries. Florian Allgäuer, born in 2006, and striker Alessandro Lo Russo, who turned 18 on Wednesday 23 September, are called up for the first time.
Lithuania had reported no withdrawals by Tuesday 22 September. Jankauskas's 26 include a first call-up for Cremonese's Adrian Lickūnas and the return of defender Kipras Kažukolovas after about 14 months out with a serious injury. Kažukolovas said on Tuesday 22 September: “Šiame lange gal ir būsime favoritai, bet nereikia papildomos įtampos, turime išeiti, nusiteikti rimtai kovai ir laimėti” (We might be favourites in this window, but there's no need for extra pressure: we have to go out, be ready for a real fight and win). Torino's Gvidas Gineitis is the squad's Serie A player.
